Former President Bill Clinton says he's trying to get more support for a charity he helped found that provides training for impoverished South African school children in hopes they can carve out a better future for themselves.

Clinton said Sunday the charity wants to fill gaps that state services cannot meet by attracting private funding and volunteers.

"I hope to get more support and make it bigger," he said during a visit to a youth center in the Soweto township outside Johannesburg on his first day of a tour through several African countries.

The City Year charity was launched by former South African President Nelson Mandela and Clinton in 2005. It provided after-school care for 23,000 children since then.

Clinton expects to meet Mandela Tuesday, a day before the former South African president celebrates his 94th birthday.
