This Fourth of July — Independence Day — we again celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. That glorious event signaled the end of the old order of British America, and the beginning of the new order of an American republic.
But it would be five long, hard years before the British Empire effectively lost the war at Yorktown. And it would be another six politically tumultuous years before the U.S. Constitution was adopted in 1781. Independence and the establishment of a new nation did not come easily.
Let’s remember that as we celebrate our independence this weekend. In 1776, the effective independence the American colonies had come to enjoy was threatened by the British crown. Today the independence of the American people is threatened by the tsunami of federal debt that defies reason.
We are in the midst of declaring a new Declaration of Independence — a declaration of America’s independence from debt! The battle over raising the debt limit is the new “shot heard around the world.” “Cut, Cap, Balance” pledge is our new constitution for achieving that goal.
This battle over the debt limit is just the beginning. Just as in the years between 1776 and 1787, it will take years to win this battle — but we cannot wait any longer to meet the challenge.
The conservative and tea party groups that have joined together in this unprecedented coalition are the Minutemen and Committees of Correspondence of today’s battle. We have already succeeded in capturing the nation’s attention and support, in itself a major victory, given the opposition of the establishment politicians and mainstream media.
Now we have to secure that victory.
This weekend, let’s celebrate two Fourths of July: the one that declared our independence in 1776, and the present one that will restore our independence from debt!
