Nearly 20 states have filed a lawsuit against Department of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos because of delays in student loan protections for certain borrowers.

Politico reports that 18 states and the District of Colombia claim DeVos' agency has illegally delayed regulations designed to protect people with student loans whose schools defrauded them.

The regulations had an original effective date of July 1, and they would provide some student loan borrowers the ability to seek loan forgiveness.

When President Donald Trump's administration delayed the start date of the rules last month, DeVos said dealing with loans that have been forgiven would eventually land on the shoulders of taxpayers.

"The result is a muddled process that's unfair to students and schools, and puts taxpayers on the hook for significant costs," DeVos said said of the borrower defense to repayment rules.

State attorneys general, led by Maura Healey of Massachusetts, would like the Trump administration to allow the regulations to go into effect.
