While nearing its fourth consecutive week at the top of The New York Times best-seller list, the publisher of “The Amateur” on Thursday accused some of the world’s largest media outlets of blackballing the new anti-President Barack Obama book written by former New York Times Magazine editor Ed Klein.

“Klein’s got the hottest book in America and is getting blackballed by the networks and other national news outlets,” Keith Appell, a publicist for Regnery Publishing, told the Washington Examiner.

“This is beyond bias,” he said. “This is an in-kind contribution to the Obama campaign.”

The book, for instance, says that the Obama campaign tried to silence the Rev. Jeremiah Wright during the 2008 campaign – and in audio tapes, Wright said he helped Obama accept Christianity without renouncing his Islamic background.
“The Amateur” has received extensive coverage from Fox TV’s Sean Hannity and other conservatives, but the so-called “mainstream media” has attacked the book or ignored it outright.

According to the Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard, “the Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and USA Today have ignored the book in their news sections.”

Regnery’s Appell added: “Not only have there been no print stories in any of the national outlets. Klein has yet to appear on ABC, CNN, CBS or ABC.”
Klein has appeared on Fox News, and Hannity interviewed him on his radio program.

In its critical review of the book, The Times called Klein "the amateur of his title" while acknowledging his journalistic credentials. But those credentials, The Times said, “won’t get him far with his target audience of readers looking for reasons to feel contempt for the president.”

The book's success is a “healthy rebuke” of The Times and speaks for itself, Appell said.
