In the wake of President Donald Trump's immigration order, Jenna Bush Hager tweeted a reminder Tuesday about what her father, former President George W. Bush, said about Muslims days after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
According to The Hill, former President Bush delivered that speech at the Islamic Center of Washington, D.C., on Sept. 17, 2001. The nation was still grieving after the terror attacks six days prior and anti-Muslim sentiment was sweeping across the country. Bush sought to bring people together with the speech.
Trump signed an executive order last Friday that put a temporary halt on people coming to the United States from seven countries with a terror presence — Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. The order also halted the refugee program from those nations for 120 days and the Syrian refugee program indefinitely.
The order resulted in protests across the country, and Democratic lawmakers have blasted the directive, calling it anti-Muslim. The administration has defended the move and said it is not aimed at Muslims but people who travel from those seven aforementioned countries.
Earlier Tuesday, officials at the Department of Homeland Security said the order was signed in the interest of national security.
