If what President Obama recently said is even remotely true, then the American dream is merely an illusion.

That’s because as I — and generations of Americans — have understood it, the individualism inherent in the promise of the American dream and the collectivism being foisted on us by the White House can’t co-exist.

The idea that you can start from nothing and become something through hard work and innovation is simply a part of the American dream narrative we’ve all come to know. But it’s only the first part of it.

The second part — that you get to then enjoy the spoils of your own hard work and success — seems to be where Obama and I part ways.

In a speech he gave last Friday in Roanoke, Va., he made his views on American success crystal clear:

“If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”
