How'd you like to see the president in a cage match with Republican House Minority Leader John Boehner? If some in the fringe media get their way, this is exactly what will happen.

But more on a potential smackdown in a minute. As movement on a myriad of policy initiatives stalls, the left is wondering just how their favorite ingénue can salvage his first term. The issue of partisanship has taken center stage: Should President Obama move further left or drift to the right so he can finally make some headway up the center?

All of this hand-wringing was supposed to be moot, of course. Obama ran on a platform to change Washington, transcend politics, and, well, make the world a little friendlier. As conservatives gagged on the saccharine hope-and-change promises, most also knew that rhetoric alone doesn't actually get anything done.

The American people would push back on his policies if they were too far outside the mainstream. And that's exactly what has happened.
