I am neither a Democrat nor a political strategist. But I do know this much: If Democrats are serious about picking up those coveted independent voters come November, they need to shift gears. Quickly.

The message thus far from President Obama has been muddled, muted, confusing, and out of touch. If congressional Democrats want to win the middle — and ultimately hold on to their seats — they have got to move as far away from it as possible.

For one, the president is taking credit for successes that he shouldn't — like Iraq, which puts Democrats in the awkward position of having to celebrate the completion of a war many of them did not support. He's also overselling the drawdown — we'll still need significant military presence there to leave a stable political system, so we're not out of the woods yet.

Smart independents will interpret this newfound pride in the Iraq war as a way of deflecting attention from the hard reality that Afghanistan is still far from over — and may in fact be getting much tougher.
