Republican and Freedom Caucus member Louie Gohmert said conservatives will "hold our nose" and support healthcare legislation if they can be assured that premiums would come down.
That's the one thing, Gohmert told C-SPAN on Wednesday.
"We were not purists — twice," Gohmert said about the Freedom Caucus.
"We agreed with the president, thought we had a deal and then Republican leadership would come in and say, 'You can't do that.' The No. 1 thing we were looking for … gosh, we'll hold our nose and vote for some of these bad provisions if we can just be certain premiums are coming down. People can't stand higher premiums right now."
Gohmert and the Freedom Caucus are now in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump and House leadership, but he took another shot at leadership, a few days after saying the American Health Care Act was built on a false premise.
And that Trump had been lied to by leadership.
"Once you get into a leadership position, all those things about principle you used to stand on become less important to you as 218," Gohmert said about the magic number needed to pass a bill when the House is at capacity.
"When you're thinking, 'I gotta get this bill passed, I gotta have 218,' sometimes you forget what it was you used to have press conferences and fuss about."
