Congress should act to remove President Donald Trump from the White House should he ignore a judicial order to stop a temporary ban on refugees and immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, Rep. Joaquin Castro says.
In a Twitter message posted Wednesday night, Castro, a Texas Democrat, wrote:
Castro also said: "I have tremendous respect for the presidency but our Republic cannot tolerate a President who ignores direct judicial orders."
He and other Democrats want Congress to probe whether the commander in chief "intentionally exceeded his constitutional authority" to enact the ban.
On Saturday, U.S. District Court Judge Ann Donnelly issued an emergency stay to temporarily halt the removal of individuals detained after Trump ordered the ban.
The order came after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in the name of two men being held at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.
The Department of Homeland Security announced late Wednesday it will review its implementation of the ban.
