With three Republican House members already vying for the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Saxby Chambliss next year, betting is now strong in Georgia that the primary field will soon grow by two more candidates.

Multimillionaire David Perdue, cousin of former Gov. Sonny Perdue, is poised to become a candidate. In addition, former Secretary of State Karen Handel is likely to enter the race if her close ally Rep. Tom Price declines to run for the Senate seat. Handel lost the GOP primary in 2010 to current Gov. Nathan Deal.

On the eve of the state party convention, there is worry among some Republicans that a crowded and potentially divisive primary could benefit the Democrats. But so far, Peach State Democrats have failed to recruit a strong candidate.
