George Prescott Bush has not decided on the office he’ll run for in Texas in 2014, but he filed campaign paperwork and his father, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, sent out the first fundraising email of the nascent effort.
The latest Bush looking to politics is leaning toward a run at land commissioner, a powerful statewide office in the Lone Star state,
reported Politico.
Jeb asked his supporters to donate to George P.’s exploratory effort, asking them to make “a personal contribution to as he begins his quest for public service.”

“Jeb’s a very supportive father and though he has not pushed any of his kids into politics, I think he is proud of [George P.’s] vocation for public service and wanting to make a difference,” said GOP strategist Ana Navarro. “All of Jeb’s friends are excited and looking forward to helping him out.”
The office of land commissioner is responsible for the mineral rights, commercial real estate and sovereign submerged lands of the state, as well as veterans affairs and historic archives. The position is not too high profile, but its requirements are significant enough that politicians can build a name and get heavily involved in state activity.
The current lieutenant governor, David Dewhurst, held the position, and current land commissioner Jerry Patterson plans to challenge Dewhurst in 2014 — so George P. would be following a well-worn path to higher office by seeking the job.
“It’s kind of a low-key job that allows you to quietly build a statewide network,” Jeb wrote in the fundraising email.
Navarro said that George P.’s background — his mother is Hispanic and he grew up in South Florida — will help the party reach a demographic that eluded the GOP in 2012.
“George P. was raised in a bicultural home in south Florida — he’s not only bilingual, he is bi-cultural and is fully comfortable functioning in that world,” she said. “His voice is just the kind that we desperately need in the Republican Party right now.”
