A highly touted candidate in Idaho’s 1st District faces a tight race in a primary election Tuesday to secure the GOP nomination to challenge Democratic Rep. Walt Minnick, according to a rollcall.com report.

That candidate, Marine Corps vet Vaughn Ward, was famously tapped by the National Republican Congressional Committee as one of its 10 “Young Guns.”

Vaughn, despite the promotion, has found himself in a tight race with state Rep. Raul Labrador, a conservative, who hails as a political outsider.

Pundits are asking if this is the setup for yet another GOP establishment candidate to fall to an upstart — as in last week’s Kentucky Senate primary where Rand Paul’s defeated Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson..

The most recent independent poll shows there is no clear favorite in Idaho.
