Donald Trump on Monday is scheduled to meet with Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, the architect of Obamacare, as the president fights to replace the healthcare package with his own plan.
The president's meeting with Emanuel is also expected to include Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and House Speaker Paul Ryan, The Washington Post is reporting.
"The session will reveal publicly what has been happening privately for months: A trusted ally of former President Barack Obama and chief architect of the Affordable Care Act is trying to help steer how Republicans take it apart," the Post noted.
It marks the third time since the November election that Emanuel has met with Trump to discuss healthcare policy, the Post reported. In addition, he has discussed health issues with several of Trump's top advisers.
"I take the president seriously when he says he wants to get everyone in the country covered," Emanuel said. "There are ideas out there that are bipartisan, and I'm pushing those ideas."
Emanuel is a bioethicist and oncologist. His brother Rahm, is the mayor of Chicago and one-time Obama chief of staff.
Despite his meetings with Trump, Dr. Emanuel opposes the proposed plan to replace it.
"In its present form, the bill is totally unacceptable to Democrats, myself included," he said.
And PBS reported Emanuel believes the proposed replacement for Obamacare needs to be revamped.
"We need to go back to the drawing board and try to get a bipartisan bill," he said. "I think there is a compromise, but only when the Republicans give up on this kind of approach."
