Texas Man Obama Pledged to Help Still Unemployed

By    |   Monday, 09 April 2012 11:10 AM EDT

Darin Wedel, an electrical engineer in Fort Worth, Texas, remains unemployed more than two months after President Barack Obama asked for his resume to help him in his job search.

Darin’s wife Jennifer participated in a Jan. 30 video chat with the president, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. She asked Obama why the government issues and extends H-1B visas to foreign workers when highly-skilled Americans like her husband can't find similar jobs.

Obama replied that business executives have told him there aren’t enough high-level U.S. engineers to meet their needs. And he asked for Darin Wedel's résumé. Wedel has been out of work for more than three years.

For weeks after that, the Wedels were barraged with inquiries from recruiters, the news media, the Texas Workforce Commission, the White House, and out-of-town and out-of-state companies about job possibilities.

But the problem was that much of the interest was shown by companies from outside North Texas, and Wedel can’t move from there because of a custody agreement for his daughter.

"I did feel we got our hopes up a little," Jennifer Wedel told the Star-Telegram. "I mean, he's the president of the United States. But it seems not even the leader of our country can get [Darin] a job."
