White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Tuesday rebuffed reports from former chief strategist Steve Bannon that President Donald Trump would "push back" against the Russia investigation, saying that "I'm not sure what we would push back against."
"I'm not sure what we would push back against, since so far they have shown more and more that there is no connection between the Trump campaign and collusion with Russia," Sanders told reporters at the daily briefing.
Politico reported Monday that Bannon, now executive chairman of Breitbart News, was pushing Trump to defund Mueller's investigation in order to confine the probe without firing him.
The report cited "several sources familiar with Bannon’s thinking," with Politico calling the funding tactic "a move that would defang Mueller without the president formally firing him."
