New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s overall job approval rating has slipped in recent months, a poll released Wednesday shows.
The Rutgers-Eagleton Poll conducted on April 3-7 showed that the Republican governor’s overall job performance rating is 68 percent, down five points from February. His favorability rating also fell, dropping by six points to 64 percent.
And while 87 percent of respondents overwhelmingly approve of Christie’s post-Sandy recovery efforts, just 42 percent of the 923 registered voters asked approve of his handling of New Jersey’s economy, and only 37 percent approve of his tax policy. About 50 percent approve of Christie’s efforts on education, the budget, and crime.
“Christie still has ratings any governor would love, but all-time highs generally come back toward earth over time,” said David Redlawsk, director of the Rutgers-Eagleton Poll and professor of political science at Rutgers University. “With Sandy recovery helping drive overall approval and voters all but ecstatic at his efforts there, Christie remains in great political shape.”
Democrats are most responsible for the overall decline. Their approval of Christie dropped 11 percent since February. Independents and Republicans continue to score him highly, at 75 percent and 93 percent, respectively.
