The driving force behind Donald Trump's presidential victory was Facebook, former campaign digital director Brad Parscale said Wednesday at a web summit in Lisbon, Portugal, CNBC reports.
That and a great product to sell in Trump himself, Parscale said.
"When Donald Trump became the candidate, we didn't have any money other than Mr. Trump's money, and I don't think he wanted to write that check all himself," Parscale told the gathering, CNBC reported. "We needed to create a grassroots campaign and we needed to go out and find millions of people to be our supporters, and Facebook allowed us to do that in alarming numbers, very fast."
To the tune of $280 million, CNBC reports.
In addition, Facebook embedded employees in the Trump campaign offices to help them target voters, a service that was offered to Hillary Clinton's campaign, too, but was rebuffed by the odds-on favorite.
Parscale said last month that "Twitter is how (Trump) talked to the people. Facebook was going to be how he won."
Facebook had "lots of products, they're a very big company and I said, 'Please educate me and my staff in everything that you can,'" Parscale said at the summit, CNBC reported.
