Brad Parscale, digital director of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, said he understood early on that "Facebook was going to be how he won" the election.

"I understood early that Facebook was how Donald Trump was going to win. Twitter is how he talked to the people. Facebook was going to be how he won," Parscale told CBS' "60 Minutes." "Facebook was the method – it was [the] highway in which his car drove on."

Parscale worked primarily with sending out carefully-tailored, low-cost digital ads to millions on Facebook.

"We did 'em on Twitter, Google search, other platforms. Facebook was the 500-pound gorilla, 80 percent of the budget kind of thing," he explained.

As the campaign progressed, Parscale explained "Facebook employees would show up for work every day in our offices," adding that employees from Google and Twitter worked there as well. Their purpose, he said, was to "teach us how to use their platform."

The social media employees were Republicans who backed Trump for president, he said. By contrast, Parscale said he heard Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's campaign "didn't accept any of their offers" for assistance.

"60 Minutes" confirmed with the Clinton campaign that Facebook and Twitter had offered aid, but that it was turned down.

Though Parscale would eventually send out as many as 50,000 to 60,000 ads a day, he said he had worked on "zero" presidential campaigns previously. He said it was ironic that while many social media platforms were developed by liberals, the Trump campaign used it "to push conservative values."
