Newt Gingrich plans to formally end his bid for the presidency on Wednesday, senior sources have told Fox News.

The campaign had been expected to make the exit official on Tuesday, but pushed the announcement back by a day, Fox News reported.

Gingrich, who is expected to throw his support to Mitt Romney, spoke by phone last week to the presumed  GOP nominee, a Gingrich spokesman told CNN.

Logistical reasons were behind the decision to make the announcement this week, CNN reported.
