Jan 25, 2011 — Tea Party caucus founder Michele Bachmann slams the “explosion of government spending.” The Minnesota Republican said her speech was not intended to compete with the official GOP State of the Union rebuttal delivered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.

Bachmann’s speech was presented in close cooperation with the Tea Party Express grass-roots conservative organization. It was billed as the tea parties’ response to the president’s annual address, and offerred yet another strong signal that the tea party groups intend to maintain a separate identity from the Republican Party’s.

“Last week we voted to repeal ObamaCare,” Bachmann says in the speech,  “And each day going forward, we must work hard to dismantle the massive government expansion that has happened over the past two years.”

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who delivered the official GOP response, also points out the perils of runaway government spending.
