Obama Aide: US Ready to Aid Yemen against Al-Qaida

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's counterterrorism adviser has called Yemen's leader to make clear that the U.S. is ready help the Yemeni government in the fight against al-Qaida.

The White House says Obama adviser John Brennan told Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, about the benefits of working closing together on counterterrorism operations.

Yemeni authorities are checking more packages in the search for terrorists who tried to mail bombs to Chicago-area synagogues. The plot has raised fears of a new al-Qaida terror attack.

Brennan also expressed appreciation for the work of Yemen's security forces.
