It may take the coming war that spares Israel to convince many Americans that Western Civilization is already in a larger war lasting for decades.
At very best, that’s a horrible premise and an even-worse consequence to contemplate. Writing about it is painful, reader patience solicited.
To begin with, an utterance of unspeakables: There will be war over Israel, far worse than what has been flaring for decades. There will be worse war over Israel regardless of whatever Israel or the United States does or does not do. That has already been decreed by Israel’s mortal enemies within the sprawling, metastasizing world of radical Islam — likely the only thing on which they can be taken at their word.Radical Islamists have sworn on everything holy to them that they will exterminate the Jewish state — its cities, its industries, its institutions, its historic sites, its temples, its schools, its culture, its religion, its entire populace. Look up the word exterminate in any dictionary. In no language does it mean merely “to bloody someone’s nose.” It means “to destroy totally.” The radical Islamist attack is upon all of Western civilization, the very core of which is the Judeo-Christian architecture of religious faiths. Israel and the United States are joined at the hip, whether Israelis or Americans, of whatever belief or lack of belief, like it. It may not make much sense to most Americans that radical Islamists want to subject tiny Israel to thermonuclear annihilation, but to them it makes all the sense in this world, and in the next. Radical Islamists devoutly hate Israel and Jews with all their heart and soul. It may come as a surprise to some non-Jews, but radical Islamists also hate equally all Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Mormons, Presbyterians . . . right on through the Yellow Pages. Radical Islamist Iranians have sworn to wipe Israel off the map. Take it to the bank they will do exactly that or die trying, and they are tooling their nukes. Israelis can no more ignore this than Americans should if nuclear terror awaited this country — as it does.
Given those realities, it is no false logic to realize Israel will do whatever it has to do — with whatever weapons available to it — to keep that from happening.
The logical next step is that Israel must act — soon — to take out Iran’s ability to inflict nuclear incineration upon it before Iran reaches that point of no return.
When Israel’s air force strikes at those Iranian nuclear facilities, it will have United States military jets flying alongside, wingtip to wingtip . . . or not.
Even if President Barack Obama goes all wobbly at the prospect of a joint attack, the U.S. will be blamed just as much by radical Islamists worldwide.
In either event, the U.S. will be forced to come to Israel’s broader defense against the inevitable counterattacks from Iran and other terrorist states.
When — there is no “if” — Israel makes its preemptive offensive strike on Iran it will be a preemptive strike also in defense of America’s homeland.
The inescapable truth is that Israel is America’s first line of defense in the larger, longer-lasting war with radical Islam.
If the U.S. allows Israel to be destroyed, no nation will trust America enough as an ally to risk standing between it and annihilation by radical, nuclear Islam.
If the U.S. does not wise up to that — and take its proper place right alongside Israel as its own first line of defense — it will find itself in the position of tiny Israel’s standing as America’s last line of defense.
