News Corp., the Rupert Murdoch-controlled company that owns Fox News and the New York Post, showed its friendliness toward the GOP by giving $1 million to the Republican Governors Association (RGA) in June.
The donation was listed in the RGA’s latest tax filing.
News Corp.’s gift to the RGA dwarfs its low four-figure donations to Democrats such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Sen. Charles Schumer of New York.
In an e-mail to Politico news service, News Corp. Spokesman Jack Horner wrote, "News Corporation believes in the power of free markets, and the RGA’s pro-business agenda supports our priorities at this most critical time for our economy."
Billionaire businessman David Koch was the only other seven-figure donor to the RGA, also giving $1 million.
The RGA raised $58 million between Jan. 1, 2009, and June 30, 2010, compared with $40 million for the Democratic Governors Association, according to IRS filings, Bloomberg reports.
That fundraising advantage is likely to help the GOP gain a majority of governorships in November elections.
Democrats now occupy 26 of the 50 governorships, and 37 are being contested this year. Republicans should pick up at least eight new seats, giving them control of 32, nonpartisan political analyst Stuart Rothenberg told Bloomberg.
