To no one's surprise, the regular press briefing at the White House on Thursday afternoon was dominated by questions about the president's now-celebrated remark to The New York Times he would not have appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions had he known Sessions would have recused himself from the Justice Department probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Asked if President Donald Trump wanted Sessions to remain Attorney General, deputy press secretary Sarah Sanders replied: "Clearly he has confidence in him, or he would not be the Attorney General."
Pressed as to whether the president feels Sessions should resign as the nation's top lawman, Sanders said: "I believe I answered that question."
Hours before Sanders' briefing, Sessions himself told reporters he plans to remain attorney general because "We love this job. We love this department, and I plan to continue to do so as long as that is appropriate."
When Newsmax asked Sanders whether the President had the same confidence in Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, she told us: "If the President didn't have confidence, he wouldn't be in that position."
