Blacks must work to control their own fate on issues that hinder them in particular, such as abortion, incarceration, and dropout rates, Timothy Johnson tells Newsmax.TV. They need to focus on Republican values such as self-reliance instead of relying on the government, says Johnson, chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation.

The foundation, a Christian, pro-life, and traditional marriage group founded in 2008, makes education its primary mission, he said during an interview at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington. “We also believe that there are some public policies out there that disproportionately, obviously, affect the black community, and we need to be willing to talk about that from a Republican perspective.

“We get the argument from the liberals who want more government dependency, but you don’t get the argument of talking about self-determination, self-reliance, and about educating people so people can determine their own fate about versus looking for the government to take them out of poverty.”
