With the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 now behind us, the United States should bring our troops home from the Mideast and focus on the economy, says Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” and a former Republican Florida representative.
“Ten years later, it is time to move forward. It is time to build a future framed more by American optimism than by suffocating fear,” he writes on Politico
. “For 10 years, American policy has been focused on dropping bombs over Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and Libya. But in 2011, the greatest threat is economic.”
Invading Afghanistan was the right thing to do in 2001, Scarborough says. “Great nations must know when to send troops into battle. But history proves that it is more important for them to know when it is time to bring those troops home. Ten years later, that time has come.”
With the country enduring its worst recession since the 1930s, it is time to focus on the economy, Scarborough says. “We will prevail. We are Americans. But first we have to have the courage to turn the page and move forward together.”
