Americans should hold lawmakers in both political parties accountable for government spending, U.S. House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan said in a prepared Republican response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

Story continues below video.

Ryan, of Wisconsin, said a budget to be proposed by House Republicans will “show you how we intend to do things differently” and cut spending to reduce the federal deficit. His office released excerpts from the rebuttal he is to deliver later tonight.

Republican Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, in a separate prepared rebuttal, said the U.S. has had “an unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt at President Obama’s direction; unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country.”
