Liberal Democrats who won’t drop their opposition to a continuation of the Bush-era tax cuts for all Americans are diverging from the views of average Americans, says
Politico columnist Roger Simon. “Some Democrats hate the rich. Most Americans, on the other hand, would like to become the rich,” he writes on the news service’s web site.
“Many Democrats in the House of Representatives would rather that jobless people lose their unemployment checks and middle-class people lose their income tax breaks than that the rich get a dime extra. Barack Obama understands this. Having grown up poor, he is today worth about $5 million, chiefly from writing books.”
Simon notes that among our most popular presidents, George Washington had a net worth of $525 million in today’s dollars, Thomas Jefferson $212 million and Theodore Roosevelt $125 million.
