Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Herman Cain’s departure from the 2012 race for president came as no surprise.

“These things are pretty common in primaries,” Priebus said Sunday on NBCs “Meet the Press.” “Candidates come and go.”

When asked whether Cain will continue to have a voice in the GOP campaign, Priebus answered, “He might have a big impact.”

“The bigger issue here is that he provided a voice, as well as the rest of our field, as to what we're going to do to get this country back on track,” he said.

He called President Barack Obama the “great divider,” and said he must be defeated next year.

“He wants to turn this country into the divided states of America,” Priebus said. “That is the Obama strategy.”

Describing Obama's poll numbers as “worse than Jimmy Carter's poll numbers,” Priebus said, “Everything that this president has touched...has gotten worse.”

“People are tired,” he said. “People are tired of this president's promises and his failure to deliver. If this president was an employee of any business out there in America, he would have been fired a long time ago.”
