Former presidential candidate and Arizona Sen. John McCain says he has made no decisions on endorsing Mitt Romney in the 2012 race for the White House, contrary to an earlier story by the The Hill.

McCain had previously said he would not endorse during the primary, and officially says he has not made up his mind.

His staff denied The Hill story is true, and this afternoon tweeted the Senator's response: "To clear up any confusion, I haven't made a decision on whether to endorse in the primary."

Sources told the news site that McCain would not choose former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to endorse. There is much hand-wringing among Republicans, publicly and privately, with some saying they dread the possibility of Gingrich as the nominee.
