Boehner: ‘Cut Up the Credit Cards’

House Speaker John Boehner on Sunday said the American people want to cut spending and not create more stimulus packages, indicating it is critical to work with congressional Democrats and the president to that end. In his first Sunday talk show appearance since his appointment, Boehner told Fox News’ Chris Wallace, “We have to cut up the credit cards.”

“In his State of the Union speech, President Obama called for new programs to create jobs, but he did not address the debt limit,” Boehner said on “Fox News Sunday.” “The American people do not want us increasing the debt limit without significant cuts in spending.

“All he called for is more stimulus spending,” he said. “In the next 10 days or so, I expect we will see the product of the Appropriations Committee," adding he is “optimistic” the full Congress will work together to put a spending cuts package on the president’s desk.

“We have been in this ‘gotcha’ politics [situation] in this country for too long,” he said.

On Egypt, Boehner said “the administration so far has handled the situation fairly well,” but agreed with many analysts that the United States faces a dilemma.

“What we don’t want is radical ideologies to take control of a very large and important country in the Middle East,” he said.
