While some polls have shown Barack Obama holding a double-digit lead over his presidential rival John McCain, a new survey by Investor’s Business Daily shows McCain gaining on Obama over the past several days.

Overall, McCain trails Obama by 3.7 percentage points — 45.7 percent to 42 percent, with 12.3 not sure — in the tracking poll released Wednesday by IBD and its polling partner, the TechnoMetrica Institute of Policy and Politics (TIPP).

But Republican McCain was behind Obama by twice that margin just four days earlier, when he trailed the Democrat 47.2 percent to 39.8 percent.

The newest poll shows McCain making gains in the West, up from 37 percent of respondents to 43 percent.

His support among suburban voters has also surged, ballooning from 45 percent on Oct. 18 to 53 percent in Wednesday’s survey, giving him a solid 20-point lead in that demographic.

The latest IBD/TIPP poll has McCain making substantial gains among voters ages 25 to 44, and 65 and over. And he actually has a 53 percent to 43 percent lead over Obama among voters ages 18 to 24.

McCain also has a lead over Obama among voters who earn at least $75,000 a year, and now holds a 48 percent to 40 percent edge among male voters, up from a 4-point lead four days ago.

According to IBD, its polling partner TIPP was the most accurate pollster during the 2004 election season.
