Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Sunday that the United States’ position is that what happens next in crisis-torn Egypt lies in the hands of the Egyptian people. Speaking on CNN’s "State of the egypt, protest, hillary, clintonUnion" with Candy Crowley, Clinton stressed this has been the U.S. stance for 30 years.

“We are encouraging a very careful approach, that respects the right of the people,” Clinton said. “What happens is truly in the hands of the Egyptian people,” adding that the United States wants political and economic reform.

“We want everyone to refrain from violence,” Clinton said. “This is a complex, very difficult situation. Egypt has been a partner and has been instrumental in keeping peace in the Middle East and with Israel.”
