Liberals Daring GOP Freshman to Drop Health Plans

Friday, 26 November 2010 06:48 PM EST

Liberal activists are telling lawmakers who oppose "Obamacare" to put their premiums where their politics are and go find private health insurance, the National Journal reports.

The symbolic push began after a GOP House freshman from Maryland who campaigned against the national health-care overhaul was heard complaining that his own federally funded coverage - available to all members of Congress - doesn't kick in fast enough.

Maryland Representative-elect Andy Harris, a physician, is now the target of a radio spot produced by the liberal group Americans United for Change in which a narrator says if Harris "wants to deny Maryland families quality, affordable health care, tell him to start with his own."

In Congress, more than 60 House Democrats have signed a letter urging their GOP counterparts to give up their government-sponsored health plans. And the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has likewise launched an online petition telling House Republicans to "forego their taxpayer-funded health care coverage before trying to repeal health insurance reform for hardworking Americans."
