Former Commerce Secretary William Daley came into the White House chief of staff job in January as a moderate who could get things done and get along with Republicans. But it hasn’t worked out well for him, thanks to his own inexperience in dealing with Capitol Hill and thanks to the difficult political and policy environment he has faced, Politico
Many Democrats didn’t like the appointment to begin with, because of Daley’s bipartisan leanings. And his failure in negotiations with congressional Republicans only has them more upset. Many in the White House aren’t pleased with his performance either.
“Is there a level of unhappiness with Bill around the White House? Yeah,” a person close to President Barack Obama said. “You do what you have to do to streamline the organization, cutting meetings from 20 people to five. But a lot of people are pissed. . . . When it comes to dealing with the Hill, well, they just don’t know Bill.”
