Gibbs: Democrats Will Keep the House in November

Tuesday, 13 July 2010 08:10 PM EDT

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs says he thinks Democrats will hang onto control of the House in November.

The spokesman's comment, in his briefing with reporters on Tuesday, is significant given the context of what he said during a news program on Sunday. Gibbs had told NBC's "Meet the Press" that there is "no doubt" that there are enough House seats in play to give Republicans a chance to seize control.

That comment caused grumbling among Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill.

Gibbs on Tuesday said he still thinks there are enough open seats to put control of the House in play, but added: "I think we'll retain the House."

He said Democrats can make a case for how they would improve people's lives.
