It’s not just Republicans who object to the new healthcare law. Several moderate Democratic senators want to eliminate the controversial requirement for people to buy health insurance, Politico reports
. That requirement, of course, stands at the heart of Obamacare.
The moderates haven’t decided yet if they will actually introduce a bill to dump the individual mandate, but any move by them against the provision obviously weakens President Barack Obama and strengthens Republicans who seek Obamacare’s repeal.
Moderate Democrats are seeking to establish independence from the liberal wing of the party, especially those who are up for re-election in 2012. A total of 23 Democratic seats will be contested next year.
The moderates most likely to break with Democratic leadership include Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Jon Tester of Montana. They all face re-election in 2012, in states Obama lost.
