Plouffe: Romney Has 'No Core'

By    |   Sunday, 30 October 2011 10:36 AM EDT

WASHINGTON — White House adviser David Plouffe says Mitt Romney has "moved all over the place" on issues from abortion to gay marriage over his career and might not have firm enough convictions to make the tough decisions as president.

On NBC's "Meet the Press" today, Plouffe cited a new Iowa Poll from the Des Moines Register showing businessman Herman Cain leading with 23 percent support, and former Massachusetts Gov. Romney next at 22 percent.

Plouffe, who was Barack Obama's 2008 campaign manager, said Cain "seems to have tapped into something."

Lots of voters still are "looking somewhere else" beyond Romney, said Plouffe, who added that he wonders whether the early front-runner can turn that around.

Plouffe said jokingly that, if Romney thought "it was good to say the sky was green and the grass was blue to win an election, he'd say it."
