Pataki Group Aims to Push Healthcare Democrats Out of Office

Thursday, 09 September 2010 11:32 AM EDT

Former New York Gov. George Pataki and his grass-roots group, evoking the image of alarm-sounding patriot Paul Revere, are sending their own signal to Democrats who backed Obamacare: Repeal is coming — and so is your eviction from Congress. The group, Revere America, which formed in April and the Republican chairs, announced a million-dollar campaign Wednesday targeting about a dozen Democrats who backed President Obama’s healthcare law.

Although Pataki refused to identify the targeted lawmakers, he pulled no punches about the healthcare law.

"It's a bad law," thehill.com political blog quotes Pataki as telling reporters at Washington's Press Club. "The American people know it's a bad law, and we're going to remind them."

Story continues below video.

Thehill.com quotes the ad, which Pataki said is slated to begin airing in a few weeks, as declaring:

"Your congressman voted for Obamacare — government-run healthcare," the narrator says, with an ominous piano tinkling in the background. "It's a bad plan. Government bureaucrats will benefit. Seniors will get hurt. Costs will go up. Care will go down.

"It's a plan we didn't want and don't need, but he voted for it anyway," the ad says. "Defeat your congressman."

At the news conference, Pataki said his group aims to flip only parts of the healthcare law, because it supports the goals of curbing malpractice claims, shifting to personal health accounts, and permitting insurance companies to sell policies across state lines.
