Conservative pundit Pat Buchanan has blunt words for the critics of Republican lawmakers’ resistance to accepting tax increases in exchange for a raising of the debt ceiling.
“The establishment is in a panic. It has been jolted awake to the realization that the GOP House, if it can summon the courage to use it, is holding a weapon that could enable it to bridle forever the federal monster that consumes 25 percent of gross domestic product,” Buchanan
writes at HumanEvents.com.
Buchanan likens the anti-Republican rhetoric to war-on-terror hysteria, and cites several examples of the more outlandish barbs published recently.
Richard Cohen wrote in The Washington Post that the GOP “has become a cult” and that its presidential candidate roster was a “virtual political Jonestown.”
The New Republic, meanwhile, ran the headline "The GOP's Hezbollah Wing Is Now Fully in Control.”
Buchanan defends the tax stance of GOP lawmakers who are merely doing what they promised their constituents.
He also refutes the notion that the House will block a necessary raising of the debt ceiling or the budget cuts agreed to during negotiations with Vice President Joseph Biden.
Democratic lawmakers and President Barack Obama, not the GOP, will be the ones standing in the way of the debt ceiling being lifted if Republicans agree to the Biden cuts, says Buchanan.
“It is the establishment that is resorting to extortion, saying, in effect, to the House GOP: Give us the new taxes we demand, or Obama will veto the debt ceiling and we will all blame you for the default,” he writes.
