Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin kicks off an East Coast bus tour Sunday, fueling speculation that she will run for the Republican presidential nomination. Advisers for the 2008 vice-presidential candidate declined to provide details of the tour, which will start in Washington and head north, The Washington Post reported.

Palin, Romney, Gallup, bus tour“Starting this weekend, Sarah Palin will embark on a one-nation tour of historical sites that were key to the formation, survival and growth of the United States of America,” according to a statement from her political action committee. The announcement comes amidst two other possible indications of a presidential run, the Post reported.

Palin has bought a $1.7 million home in Scottsdale, Ariz., that political observers say could serve as a base for a national run. In addition, a documentary charting her political rise in Alaska is set to debut in Iowa next month, with other showings also planned for New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina — all states that figure in the early goings for the 2012 election.

Many Republican strategists have gone on the theory that Palin would not seek the presidency in 2012.

However, a Gallup survey released today showed that Palin runs second only to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in a narrowed field of potential rivals for the GOP nod. And her second-place showing was close: She garnered 15 percent support to Romney's 17 percent.

The Gallup survey was the organization's first since Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and real estate mogul Donald Trump opted out of the slowly evolving primary race.
