Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says she needs support from the National Organization for Women (NOW) “like a fish needs a bicycle.” Palin made the comment to Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren Wednesday in reference to NOW’s somewhat reluctant condemnation of a vulgar remark comedian Bill Maher made about Palin during his Friday HBO show.

palin, NOW, fish, water, maherThe discussion centered on whether women in politics – particularly conservative women – are treated by a different standard than their male counterparts. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who recently was taken to task over an admitted mistake she made about the Revolutionary War, has made that point, noting mistakes President Barack Obama has made – without equal criticism.

Van Susteren asked whether Palin thought women were treated differently than men in politics.

“Yes – of course – women are held to a different standard in all areas,” Palin said. “But my point is going to be: So what. You know, let’s just work harder, produce more, produce better, and get over it. I’m through whining about a liberal press that holds, especially conservative women, to a different standard, because it doesn’t do me any good to whine about it.”

Van Susteren noted that Maher’s comment was particularly vulgar, and though Palin might say she doesn’t care, it is degrading to women.

“I’m dealing with it, I guess, in a different way than others – others who want to bring more light to it, demand that Bill Maher apologize, or that NOW defend me for something that was said about me,” Palin said.

“By the way: I need NOW’s defense, like a fish needs a bicycle. I don’t want them to defend me,” she continued. “My point is: When a shot is taken at me, it is like water off a duck’s back, because I know the important things in life that we need to concentrate on.

“But, you’re right, when it comes to other women, when it comes to my daughters … I’m not going to retreat on that – I’ll reload and I’ll tell them what I think about them,” Palin said. “And hold them accountable for what it is that they say about other woman, because in that respect, it is not fair.”
