With Republicans gaining more and more power in the continuing fallout from November’s resounding election victory, many are playing up the issue of states’ rights. Virginia GOP Gov. Bob McDonnell is one of them, Politico reports.

“The issue of federalism is front and center,” Politico quotes McDonnell as saying. “What we’re going to see is more talk of devolution and more power to the states. I don’t think it’s a granting of power, it’s just restoring what our founders meant.”

The Republican Party hasn’t marshaled its forces enough yet to be able to defeat President Barack Obama in next year’s presidential election, said McConnell, adding that he wants to play a central role in that effort.

However, McDonnell, who gave the Republican response to Obama’s State of the Union address in 2010, says he’s not lobbying to be the party’s vice-presidential candidate, as plenty of others will be available. As for him, “I'm not expecting any calls. But I do want to be part of the national debate.”
