Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., has a new career picked out for his buddy, Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent Democrat from Connecticut who announced his retirement Wednesday. President Barack Obama should consider naming Lieberman as his next secretary of defense, McCain says, according to The Hill. Current Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he wants to leave his post by the end of the year.

"I really hope that the president would consider him. I hadn't thought about it, but I sure hope, whatever happens, he will play a major role on national security issues," McCain added.

But it would be a shocker for Obama to name Lieberman to a top Cabinet position after his past conflicts with the president and the rest of the Democratic Party.
