Newt Gingrich is the best Republican candidate to defeat President Barack Obama and his socialist ideas, the Rev. Tim LaHaye tells Newsmax.
The well-known evangelical minister, co-author of the best-selling “Left Behind” book series, said in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV that the surging Gingrich is “the sharpest and clearest person and the greatest candidate with a possibility of unseating Obama, which is an absolute necessity in the next election.”

LaHaye, who endorsed Gingrich last week, said the former House speaker “has an optimistic viewpoint of America, and his long association with Ronald Reagan has given him that kind of idea that we are a city on a hill and have our best years ahead of us instead of our best years behind us and the malaise we are in right now is caused by government and their socialistic planning.”
LaHaye predicted that Gingrich will win the primary Saturday in South Carolina, where increasing numbers of polls have Gingrich pulling ahead of front-runner Mitt Romney.
“They vote on principle,” LaHaye said of rural South Carolinians he got to know while he was a pastor there in college. “They stand behind someone who’s going to stand for the things they stand for and I believe Newt Gingrich best embodies that.”
When asked how Gingrich would do in the general election against Obama, he said, “Very well because most people are sick and tired of the Democratic socialist view of government, big government intruding into our lives, planning everything for us.
“They have bungling people that don’t know what they’re doing. In fact, I think most people are astonished that this president has appointed so many czars that haven’t been approved by anyone. He’s like a dictator, he appoints them and they have the same socialist views that he does and socialism is bad for America.”
