McCain: Santorum Made a Mistake

By    |   Sunday, 29 May 2011 10:48 AM EDT

Responding publicly for the first time to presidential candidate Rick Santorum’s contention that the former prisoner of war doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works, Arizona Sen. John John McCain, Rick SantorumMcCain says Santorum probably realizes he erred, according to Politico.

“I think Rick realizes he made a mistake here,” McCain, who spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, said on “Fox News Sunday,” about the former Pennsylvania senator’s comments.

McCain also indicated he does not believe that enhanced-interrogation techniques work.

“I think he should look at the record, including that of [CIA] director Leon Panetta and California [Sen.] Diane Feinstein, who both said that not only did we not get good information from [al-Qaida operative Khalid Sheik Mohammed] but we got bad information,” he said.

McCain said that information garnered to locate and kill al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was done by standard means, and saying otherwise does “a bit of a disservice to the thousands of people in our intelligence agency who labored night and day putting this piece of the puzzle together.”

The Arizona senator also said he was disappointed in President Barack Obama’s Libya strategy.
