For weeks it has appeared that Republicans are headed for huge wins in the coming election and that independent voters will be responsible for the surge. A new poll
from Politico/George Washington University confirms that view.
Independents support Republicans over Democrats by 14 percentage points, according to the survey. Politico didn’t provide the percentage figures for each party. Given that Republicans lead Democrats by 47 to 42 percent among all voters combined, you can see what a key role the independents play.
The shift of independents to the Republican side of the ledger may be even more important than the rise of the tea party, which also has helped to spark GOP gains.
The poll also confirms the enthusiasm gap favoring Republicans. The GOP preference advantage widens to 12 percentage points among those people “extremely likely” to vote.
