The liberal media are trying to “gin up” the story about a racial slur that appeared in the early 1980s in front of a west Texas ranch where GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry hunted with his father, Sean Hannity said on his radio show today.

“None of the reports allege that Perry . . . painted that word on the rock,” Hannity said. “Perry said his dad painted over it. The Obama media is attacking Rick Perry.”

Republicans are running against overt media bias, Hannity said.

“Watch the media in this race,” Hannity said. “Watch how important little things become. The Obama media’s playing a game here, one they didn’t play in 2007 and 2008.”

The press corps probably has deployed “spies looking for a macaca moment,” said Hannity, who said he expects members of the liberal media to go after Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, and other GOP contenders as well.

“They will use, on the left, anything they can find,” he said. “This is why journalism is dead in America.”

Regarding the racial slur, a spokesman for Perry released the following statement in response to the controversy, which a Washington Post story stirred up: “A number of claims made in the story are incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous, including the implication that Rick Perry brought groups to the lease when the word on the rock was still visible.

“The one consistent fact in the story is that the word on a rock was painted over and obscured many years ago,” said Ray Sullivan, communications director of RickPerry.org.
