Attorney General Eric Holder should resign immediately because of the bungled Operation Fast and Furious gunrunning scandal of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), says Rep. Paul Gosar.

The Arizona Republican made the statement on “Fox and Friends” today, just two days after Holder acknowledged that the ATF's gun-trafficking scheme was “fundamentally flawed” and “completely unacceptable,” in a lengthy explanatory letter he sent to six leading members of Congress.

However, much of Holder’s five-page letter spurned responsibility for the fatal program, which ultimately funneled guns to criminals. One of the guns was used in the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and another, in the killing of Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata.

Instead, Holder’s letter attacked Republican members of Congress for anything from criticism of him to their defense of gun rights, as Newsmax reported Friday.

Gosar is a member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, whose chairman, California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, has led the probe into the scandal.

Late Friday, committee members slammed Holder's letter as self-serving.

Among other things, the letter attacked Gosar specifically for his statement last week that administration officials may be “accessories to murder” for their role in the project.

“Such irresponsible and inflammatory rhetoric must be repudiated in the strongest possible terms,” Holder's letter said. “Those who serve in the ranks of law enforcement are our Nation’s heroes and deserve our Nation’s thanks, not the disrespect that is being heaped on them by those who seek political advantage. I trust you feel similarly and I call on you to denounce these statements.”

Gosar spurned any such idea on "Fox and Friends" this morning, saying instead that recovering from the scandal must acknowledge "the victims on both sides of the border” and hold officials accountable.

“This starts with accountability from the top,” he said, insisting that Holder should resign immediately.
